Essentials to Standard conversion certainly is supported. Next, we purchased an open license for Server Standard, and this was the license key MAK I was unsuccessful in using for the conversion.

Converting to Standard leaves you with Standard. For some reason I thought additional domain controllers could not be added to an "Essentials Domain".
